Henry Alvarez, MD, was initially inspired to pursue a career in the laboratory by the opportunity to analyze a wide variety of specimens and contribute to helping ease the suffering patients, as well as playing a vital role in advancing patient care. Dr. Alvarez says, “I have found in this profession a true calling—one I pursue with passion and that inspires my colleagues through its dedication and commitment to the well-being of our communities.”
Here, Dr. Alvarez, Advisory Board Chair for the ASCP Board of Certification in Ecuador, shares more about his career journey in the laboratory.
Rather than a single event, my decision was strengthened by a deep sense of vocation and service to the most vulnerable. One experience that stands out was during my time as an intern, when a fellow student was diagnosed with kidney failure. With permission from the head of service, I was able to perform a series of additional tests that proved meaningful in his care. That moment gave me profound satisfaction. It showed me that even as a student, I could contribute knowledge to improve someone’s life. I realized then that this profession is rooted in service and solidarity, practiced without expectation of reward, and that these principles give our work its true meaning.
At times, my identity has been a source of strength, and at other times, a challenge. On the positive side, my training, values, and strong professional ethics have reinforced my role as an integral member of the healthcare team. On the other hand, I have also observed how stereotypes and the limited visibility of medical laboratory professionals have sometimes hindered full recognition of our contributions. Rather than discouraging me, these challenges have only strengthened my resolve to highlight the essential role of our profession and to actively promote equity, inclusion, and appreciation within the broader medical and scientific community.
For me, contributing to patient care means delivering accurate, reliable scientific information that physicians can use to guide their clinical decisions. While my work may not always be visible to patients, I never lose sight of the fact that behind every specimen is a person waiting for timely and precise answers that can determine the course of their treatment.
Being part of the diagnostic process carries tremendous responsibility. It requires rigor in following procedures, quality controls, and standards, because patient safety, trust, and well-being depend on it. This quiet yet essential contribution is what gives my profession its true meaning and value.
I believe my work has a profound impact. Laboratory results form the foundation of modern medicine, informing more than 70 percent of clinical decisions. Every accurate analysis confirms diagnoses, monitors treatments, and prevents complications.
Even without direct patient contact, I know that my work supports their recovery, provides reassurance to their families, and enables physicians to act with confidence. This responsibility inspires me to uphold the highest ethical and technical standards, always remembering that behind every sample is a life that deserves care, dignity, and respect.
